Bombers varsity soccer loses 2-1 to Webutuck

PINE PLAINS — Despite their domination of the playing field and intense competition, the Pine Plains varsity boys soccer team met its defeat against Webutuck during a home game held on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Starting at 6:30 p.m. on the soccer field behind Stissing Mountain Junior/Senior High School, the Pine Plains Bombers dominated possession of the ball. Yet in spite of their playing the entire first half of the game, they only scored one goal, said Pine Plains Coach Steven Sandman, praising Christian Lopez’s individual effort and strike in scoring the team’s only game goal.

While the Bombers increased their intensity in the second half, the game became more balanced as Webutuck rose to the challenge. Diego Abad scored the Warriors’ first goal while Zachary Klingner scored the second goal. The Warriors also scored five corner kicks while the Bombers scored seven corner kicks. Along with praising the team’s freshman players for stepping up, Webutuck Coach Kevin Doyle commended Van Edmundson’s efforts as a goalie with three noteworthy saves during the game.

With the game in double overtime, the Warriors finished the game as victors with a final score of 2-1, marking “a real crushing ending to a game that should have gone our way,” Sandman said.

Yet in spite of the game’s final outcome, Sandman said, “It was the Bombers’ best game from start to finish by far. Lots of heart… and passion by our squad… I think we can give this second half of the season a good turnaround.”

Meanwhile, Doyle considered the Warriors’ victory over the Bombers as a “rogue win,” and while pleased by the game’s results, he said, “We as a team need to play better. I know we could have played better.”
