Break-in at Auxiliary Thrift Shop

WINSTED —  Items were stolen and property damage was reported at a break-in has been reported at The Auxiliary Thrift Shop on  120 Willow St.

According to organization president Milly Hudak, the break-in took place during the evening of Friday, June 9.

The Auxiliary is a nonprofit organization that was founded over 100 years ago to offer financial aid to community health programs.

All items purchased and donated to The Auxiliary Thrift Shop help to support health related programs in and around Winsted.

“They busted a window and the glass door,” Hudak said. “They took around $300 worth of merchandise, mostly items for young girls. They left the shop in a horrendous mess of broken glass everywhere.”

Hudak said that building landlord Tony Reynaud replaced the door on the front of the store and will replace the store’s window.

Hudak said the break-in did not prevent the store from opening on Saturday, June 9.

“No way are we going to stay closed,” Hudak said. “We are here to help the people and that’s what we are going to do.”

Winchester Police Department Chief William Fitzgerald would not comment for this story.
