Eugene Alton Murphy

NORTH CANAAN — Eugene Alton Murphy, 69, died August 23, 2015, at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Tisserand) Murphy.

Eugene was born in North Canaan, at the former Geer Hospital, son of the late Mildred (Hyson) and Kendrick Murphy.

Eugene was a graduate of  Housatonic Valley Regional High School. From there he joined the U.S Navy and served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a BM-3 and was assigned to the USS Little Rock and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. 

Once home he joined his father and began his career at the family lumber company. Eugene handled all aspects of Murphy Lumber, from logging and sawing to taking care of the mechanical repair of the equipment. 

He was known to be a wonderful cook, and enjoyed repairing anything mechanical. He was a man who could really fix anything.

Eugene is survived by his son, Shaun Murphy and his wife, Tracey, of North Canaan; his daughter, Laura Perotti of East Canaan and her companion,  Thomas Rowe; his sister, Patricia Pickens of Vermont; and his three grandchildren, Shaun and Hillary Murphy and Amanda Perotti. 

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Kenny and Bob.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery in North Canaan. Calling hours will also be held on Saturday at the funeral home from 11 a.m.

Man, 60, dies in single-car crash on Route 272 in Norfolk

Norfolk fire and ambulance crews responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.

NORFOLK — A 60-year-old Oregon man is dead after a single-car crash Friday, Nov. 14, according to Connecticut State Police.

Kevin Scott, of Portland, was driving a Ford Escape southbound on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) when he exited the roadway while negotiating a curve and struck a utility pole. The Ford rolled onto its side and the airbags deployed. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the car.

GNH collides with Holy Cross

WINSTED — Holy Cross High School won 36-20 against the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team Saturday, Nov. 15.

The hard-fought contest was won in the air. Holy Cross QB Brady Lombardo completed 16/31 passes for 309 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.

NEWTOWN — Housatonic Valley Regional High School's girls soccer team's state tournament run concluded in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Morgan High School Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The final four finish was the deepest playoff push for Housatonic since 2014. Lainey Diorio scored both goals and keeper Vi Salazar logged 10 saves in the semifinal game.
