Green contract awarded

SHARON — Work on the Sharon Green drainage project is expected to start within six weeks. The Board of Selectmen voted to award the contract for the project at their meeting on Tuesday, May 14.

The contract to complete the regrading and add granite curbing was awarded to RAR Excavating in Torrington.

That company will also handle the drainage correction, although drainage was not included in the original bid. Even with the drainage, the project costs will remain within the original allocation. The work is expected to be completed by August.

The selectmen voted unanimously to designate Miriam Jones as veterans’ services contact for the town. She has already been serving as a resource for the town’s veterans and their families, helping them through the processes to obtain veterans’ benefits.

Jones joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1977 and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant E6, before retiring from the military in 1987.

“I intend to find every veteran living in the town of Sharon,” she told the selectmen, eager to hear from veterans who have questions about their benefits or services available to them.

In observance of Municipal Clerks’ Week which occurred the week of May 5, the selectmen honored Town Clerk Linda Amerighi for her 30 years of service.
