Halloween in the Harlem Valley

HARLEM VALLEY — There are plenty of activities sure to spook and delight as Halloween draws near. Below is a list of what’s happening around the region in anticipation of All Hallows’ Eve.

Millerton

• NorthEast-Millerton Library, 75 Main St., Costume Parade to Farmers Market, Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m.

• NorthEast-Millerton Library, 75 Main St., story hour and non-food Trick or Treat on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 6 p.m. No Haunted House this year.

• Fire Company Block Party,  Century Boulevard, Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m.

• Irondale School Haunted House and Trick or Treat at 16 Main St., Head of Harlem Valley Rail Trail, on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 9 p.m. Call 518-789-6440 to help decorate. 

Wassaic

• The Wassaic Project — Family activities and PG 13 Haunted Mill, Saturday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 9 p.m. at 37 Furnace Bank Road.

• Monster’s Ball, The Lantern, 10 Main St., on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 9 p.m., adults only, costumes mandatory, tickets in advance, www.wassaicproject.org. 

Dover Plains

• Trick or Treat with Horses, Sunday, Oct. 27, from 10:30 a.m. to noon,  Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue, 2699 Route 22. Donations of candy needed.

• Truck or Treat, Parade and activities — Boyce Park, 6420 Route 55, Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. Register at www.doverrecreation.com or call 845-832-9168.

Millbrook

• Donate candy for families in the village to give out on Halloween. Drop off at the Recreation Office at Village Hall, 35 Merritt Ave., or at the Town Clerk’s office, 10 Reservoir Drive. 

• Trunk or Treating and Halloween Parade to Farmers Market, Town of Washington Recreation, 12 Elm Drive School Parking Lot, playground side, Saturday, Oct. 26, cars arrive by 11:15 a.m., costumed children by 11:30 a.m., ends at 1:30 p.m. For details, call 845-677-8278.

Pine Plains

• Halloween Party at Pine Plains Hose Company No. 1, at 7 Lake Road, on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m., costume judging 6:30 p.m. 

Stanfordville 

• Trunk or Treat at Recreation Park, 86 Creamery Road on Friday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. For more information, email townofstanfordrec@gmail.com or call 845-868-1366, ext. 5. No Haunted House this year.

Copake

• Halloween Party — Copake Park Building, 305 Mt. View Road, Thursday, Oct. 31, 5 p.m.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
