Marvelwood wrestler wins ‘Rumble on Hill’ tournament

KENT — Raymond “Duke” Sherwood, a member of the class of 2013 at The Marvelwood School, won his division at the annual Canterbury School Wrestling Invitational, where he was seeded no. 1 in the 195 class. It was the first time a Marvelwood student won the tournament. The tournament, nicknamed “The Rumble on the Hill,” took place Dec. 1 at Canterbury School, with 320 wrestlers participating. Sherwood dominated his opponent in the quarter final, a student from Salisbury School, and pinned him in the third period. His semi-final opponent from Wilbraham and Monson Academy, who is a multiple-time Russian national freestyle wrestling and jiu jitsu champ, had not lost a match in two years, but was defeated by Sherwood 4-2 in what the attending coaches dubbed the match of the night. His final was versus a repeat opponent from The Hotchkiss School. After an early lead and reversal, Sherwood hit a Granby Roll and reversed for two points and the win — the first time in Marvelwood history that a wrestler has won this event. Marvelwood’s Patrick Mwangi placed fourth with three wins; Michael Janecek, Andrew Schoenberg and Andrew Moore won a varsity match; and in JV, Remy Katz produced two pins and Colt Blumenthal won a match.
