Mini library in a mini ’fridge

NORTH CANAAN — Anyone looking for children’s books can now come to the North Canaan Town Hall and visit the Little Free Library at the entrance.

The library, which was a small refrigerator in a previous life, is the brainchild of Barb Johnson and her sister, Judy Warner.

Johnson said, “I just wanted to give something back to the town, which is the most magical place on Earth.”

The Little Free Library is an international phenomenon, started in 2009 by Todd H. Bol.

The idea is simple: Take a book or leave a book.

This particular library was created by Warner and her husband, Tom. The refrigerator was painted a festive red color, and a roof added.

At the dedication on Thursday, May 16, at North Canaan Town Hall, Katie and Jackson Holst-Grubbe checked out the book selection and took a couple each.

First Selectman Charlie Perotti said, “It’s a great idea, I think it’s fantastic for the town.”

The library is open when the town hall is.

Additional books, of which there is already a good supply, will be kept in Perotti’s office.
