Mountaineer Week in Review

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School Mountaineers have reached the halfway point of the fall season. 

The co-op MCW junior varsity football team lost to Platt Tech on Sept. 16 12-0. Isaiah Robles (Housatonic) had eight tackles and forced a fumble. Josiah Dillard (Oliver Wolcott) rushed for 25 yards. 

The varsity squad traveled to Cheney Tech in Manchester for a night game on Sept. 20. Harry Schopp (Housatonic) had a fumble recovery and Ethan Galinski (Oliver Wolcott) had four tackles in the 45-0 loss. 

The JV team hosted Cheney Tech on Sept. 23. The game ended in a 38-0 loss. The varsity team faced Thames River on Oct. 5. The team lost 34-0. 

On Sept. 17, the cross-country team traveled to Plumb Hill to face Litchfield and Terryville. The boys team lost to both schools. Shane Stampfle finished ninth and Jace Tomaino finished 10th. The girls team won against both schools. Brooke Stampfle finished third, followed by Charlotte Clulow (fourth), Avery Tripp (seventh), and Libby Menniges (ninth). 

The team celebrated their Senior Day on Sept. 24. Seniors Shane Stampfle, Jace Tomaino, Xavier Johnson, Anthony Fenn and Ben Foster were recognized for their contributions to the team. Even though both teams lost the meet, strong performances were given by Brooke Stampfle (fourth), Charlotte Clulow (eighth), Shane Stampfle (third), Jace Tomaino (6th), and Xavier Johnson (ninth). The girls season record is 3-3 and the boys season record is 2-4. 

The team participated in the Camp Sloper Relays on Oct. 3. This Invitational Meet at the YMCA camp in Southington features two-person and four-person teams running a 1.5 mile relay race.

The boys soccer team lost to Northwestern at home on Sept. 17, 2-0. Goalie Jacob Sheltra had five saves. The teams traveled to Litchfield on Sept. 19. The JV won 2-0 with goals from Carlos Lopez-Gonzalez and Russell Sears. The varsity lost to undefeated Litchfield, 6-0. Jacob Sheltra had six saves in goal. 

The varsity team returned home to win 3-2 against Gilbert on Sept. 24. Lucas Calhoun had two goals and Luke Mollica had one goal and one assist. Jacob Sheltra had 10 saves in goal. The JV team did not have a game. The varsity team traveled to Thomaston on Sept. 27. The team lost a hard-fought game, 2-0. 

Jacob Sheltra had four saves in goal. Luke Mollica scored four goals and Keaton Terrall had two goals in the 6-0 home win versus Shepaug on Oct. 1. Jacob Sheltra had five saves. Varsity lost to Nonnewaug, 6-1, on Oct. 4. Jacob Sheltra had four saves in goal. Lucas Calhoun scored the lone goal for Housatonic. JV beat Nonnewaug with a goal from Carlos Lopez-Gonzalez, 1-0. The varsity team’s season record is 3-4.

The girls soccer team played under the lights against Litchfield on Sept. 19. Even though the JV team lost 2-0, the young team did not allow any goals in the second half. Nichole Aguilar had eight saves including a high punch save in the second half. The varsity team won, 4-3. Sydney Segalla had two goals with Aliza Luminati and Neve O’Connell each scoring one. Tori Dodge had two assists and Alexis Galgano had one assist. 

The team traveled to Gilbert on Sept. 24, where the varsity team won 6-1. Goaltender Maggie Bickford had four saves. The team returned home on Sept. 26 to face Northwestern (this game was originally scheduled for Sept. 17). Varsity won 3-1 with goals from Sydney Segalla (two) and Melody Matsudaira (one). Tori Dodge had one assist. Maggie Bickford had seven saves in goal. 

The JV team lost 3-1, with Catherine Bushey scoring for Housatonic. Nichole Aguilar had 18 saves in goal. 

The varsity team continued their winning streak with an 8-1 win versus Thomaston on Sept. 27. Because of Thomaston’s low numbers, the JV team only played one half. Aliza Luminati and Sydney Segalla each had two goals and Genevieve Bushey had one in the 5-1 win at Shepaug on Oct. 1. JV did not have a game. 

Varsity beat Nonnewaug 2-0 on Oct. 4. Neve O’Connell and Sydney Segalla scored on assists from Genevieve Bushey. Maggie Bickford had nine saves. The varsity team remains undefeated and ranked no. 2 in Class S. 

The field hockey team is playing a JV schedule this season. They faced Shepaug on Sept. 25. Goalie Haley Considine had seven saves in the 7-0 loss. The team won 1-0 against Hotchkiss on Oct. 4. Molly Menniges scored the goal on an assist from Myah Baird and Hope Carlson.

Volleyball traveled to Terryville on Sept. 17. The teams lost 3-0. The teams hosted Monument Mountain on Sept. 19. Both teams lost 3-0. The varsity team went on to win against out-of-league Koble Catherdal, 3-1. The teams lost to league powerhouse, Nonnewaug on Sept. 24. 

Varsity won 3-2 against Holy Cross on Sept. 26. Jessy Haggard had four aces and 15 assists. Molly O’Connor had three blocks. Lindsey Clark had two kills. Val Lenis had two digs. Jenna Luz had eight aces and five kills. Maggie Raftery had seven kills. Tina Arango had one ace and one dig. Jillian Diamond had one ace; four digs and five kills. Allison Black had eight digs. 

The varsity team posted positive stats during the Oct. 3 loss at Monument Mountain. Jill Diamond had six digs, three kills and two aces. Allison Black had eight digs and one ace. Jenna Luz had two aces, two blocks and three kills. The JV team also lost to Monument Mountain. The teams lost to out-of-league schools Dover on Oct. 1 and Monument Mountain on Oct. 3. The team’s season record is 2-6.

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School’s girls soccer team is headed to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Mountaineers are the highest seeded team of the four schools remaining in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class S playoff bracket.
