NORTH CANAAN ­— Natale “Ned” Negri, 96, died peacefully on Oct. 11, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of Ida (Mezzofalco) Negri. Mr. and Mrs. Negri were wed Sept. 5, 1944, and celebrated their 67th anniversary this year. Ned was born in East Canaan on Dec. 25, 1914, son of the late Domenic and Margaret (Zazzera) Negri.Ned worked for many years as the custodian of Troop B of the Connecticut State Police Barracks in North Canaan. He retired from the barracks and was then employed by the former Canaan National Bank that later became Salisbury Bank and Trust. He was also a caretaker for several properties in the area.Ned was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in North Canaan. He was bestowed life membership in the Knights of Columbus. Locally, Ned was a member of the Berkshire Council Knights of Columbus. Ned served his country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy.In addition to his wife, Ned is survived by his son, John E. Negri, and his wife, Sue, of East Falmouth, Mass.; their children, Katie and her husband, Tom, Jonathan, Joseph, James, Peter and Mary; his daughter, Marie N. Carver and her husband, Gary, of Wilmington, Vt., and their children, Kristi and Kyle and his wife, Karen; his two great-grandchildren, Nora and Thomas; his sister, Louise Wheeler of Torrington; his sister-in-law, Mary Negri of North Canaan; and several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his four brothers, Domenic, Joseph, Michael and Martin; and his sister, Rose.A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Joseph’s Church in North Canaan. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.Memorial donations may be sent to the Berkshire Council Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, 4 Main St., North Canaan, CT 06018; the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 178, North Canaan, CT 06018; or the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception in care of Father Joseph MIC, P.O. Box 716, Stockbridge, MA 01262.Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
