Horn forms PAC to assist state, local candidates

SALISBURY — State Rep. Maria Horn (D-64) has formed a political action committee to help candidates for state and local offices who share Horn’s ideals and beliefs.

MPAC (the M stands for “Maria”) is separate from Horn’s reelection campaign.

In her announcement, Horn wrote about her alarm at the recent decisions of “a reactionary Supreme Court.”

“When the federal government can no longer protect our rights, or take action on the urgent issues before us, state government is more important than ever. Electing representatives willing to fight for those rights, and work together to make sure that everyone in our state is protected today and in the future, is critically important at both the state and local level. “

In a phone interview Sunday, July 24, Horn reiterated that MPAC is for supporting like-minded candidates.

Asked if it is unusual for a member of the Legislature to form a PAC, Horn said no.

When she first ran for the General Assembly, she received support from PACs associated with Democratic leadership in the Legislature.

“This is a way to pay it forward,” she said.

There are 309 PACs currently listed with the State Elections Enforcement Commission, many of them “Two or more persons” organizations such as MPAC. Another local example is the 30th District Republican Senatorial Committee.
