Snow postpones events, causes travel headaches

WINSTED — Two separate snowstorms on Saturday, Jan. 24, and Monday, Jan. 26, caused travel problems and event postponements.On Jan. 24, residents had to deal with a snowstorm that left behind 6 inches of snow.Due to the storm, the Pints for a Purpose event to benefit the Northwest YMCA was moved from Jan. 24 to Saturday, Jan. 31. The event will be taking place at Whiting Mills and will start at 6 p.m.Also canceled was the Listening Club event that was going to be held at the Norfolk Library on Jan. 24. The event will be rescheduled for a later date.After the Jan. 24 snowstorm, residents braced for Winter Storm Juno. Forecasters predicted that the storm would leave up to 3 feet of snow throughout the area.In preparation for the storm, Town Manager Dale Martin declared a snow emergency throughout town starting at 10 a.m. on Jan. 26. Town officials were also prepared to open an emergency shelter for residents in need.Gov. Dannel P. Malloy issued a statewide travel ban that started at 9 p.m. At a press conference, Malloy said the storm had the potential to set state snowfall records.During the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 27, forecasters revised their snowfall estimates and said that accumulations would be much less than originally estimated.In an email to local media and town officials, Martin wrote that no significant issues took place overnight during the storm, and Connecticut Light and Power stated that there were no electrical outages reported.Malloy lifted the travel ban in Litchfield County and Fairfield County at 8:30 a.m. and throughout the state at 2 p.m.
