Alfred Robinson

NORTH CANAAN — Alfred Robinson, 98, formerly of Brewster, Mass., died peacefully Jan. 19, 2012, at Geer.Mr. Robinson was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Methuen, Mass., the son of the late Amelia and Frank Robinson.Mr. Robinson graduated from MIT and worked for General Electric for 36 years as an engineer, until he retired to Brewster on the Cape in 1976. He was a longtime member of the Brewster Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, ran prayer groups and acted as the church treasurer. An avid outdoorsman, Al enjoyed skiing, kayaking, sailing and spending time on the beach. He was a Mason and master of the Lynnfield Lodge in Lynnfield, Mass. He is survived by his daughter, Sally A. Ford of North Canaan; his daughter-in-law, Jean B. Robinson of Marshfield, Mass.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Laurel and Mark Caliendo, Earl and Christine Dakers, Sarah and Jason Sherman and Scott Robinson; and four great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Clayton Caliendo and Trevor and Chloe Dakers. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth (Emerson) Robinson; and a son, David Emerson Robinson.Memorial donations may be made to Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main St., Brewster, MA 02631, or to the Special Olympics, Adult Services, Attn: Tom McElman, 405 Washington St., Hanover MA 02339.

From research to recognition: Student project honors pioneering Black landowner

Cornwall Consolidated School seventh graders Skylar Brown, Izabella Coppola, Halley Villa, Willow Berry, Claire Barbosa, Willa Lesch, Vivianne DiRocco and Franco Aburto presented a group research project on the life of Naomi Freeman Wednesday, April 23. In attendance were U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., John Mills, president of Alex Breanne Corporation, Cornwall First Selectman Gordon Ridgway, Cornwall Selectman Jennifer Markow and CCS social studies teacher Will Vincent.

CORNWALL — “In Cornwall you have made the decision that everyone here matters and everyone’s story is important,” said U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-Waterbury, to the seventh grade class at Cornwall Consolidated School April 23.

Hayes was in attendance to celebrate history on Wednesday as the CCS students presented their group research project on the life of Naomi Cain Freeman, the first Black female landowner in Cornwall.
