Hotchkiss boys varsity squash begins season with a win

LAKEVILLE — The game of squash, while not exactly in its youth, is not yet widespread. While mostly unheard of in public high schools, squash does have some popularity in private schools and at colleges and universities.

It has not even become an Olympic sport.

Squash is an indoor racquet game played with a slender racket and a small, “squashable ball. It is played on a court with three walls, all of which are used during game play.

One of the area schools that has a squash team is The Hotchkiss School.

After the varsity boys had their first match of the season at home on Wednesday. Dec. 1, against Rye Country Day, coach Jackson Marvel commented that “many people have not played before. There aren’t a ton of squash courts in the U.S., compared to the number of, say, basketball courts.

Hotchkiss got the season off to a good start by winning the match, 5-2.

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
