Adopt-a-Family

MILLERTON — Adopt-A-Family provides brand new, warm clothing and age-appropriate toys for children up to age 16 who otherwise would go without.

Millerton businesswoman Stacey Moore heads up the charity, which provides the items to families in Millerton, North East, Amenia, Pine Plains and even to some in Ancram and Ancramdale. She’s looking for donations of goods as well as financial contributions.

“We will desperately need the funds to purchase the clothing, Moore said, adding that money is only part of what’s needed. New clothing and toys, unwrapped, are also needed.

Moore has new items that have been requested, in addition to the ones already published. Those new items include: carpenter tools for teenage boys, footballs and soccer balls, Hannah Montana items, car-related items, anything related to High School Musical or Dora the Explorer, John Deere tractors and toys, Transformers, Uno Spin, Pictionary Man, Junga, Guess Who, Connect Four, checkers, Etch-a-Sketch, WWF wrestling items, remote control cars and trucks, model airplanes and cars, Sponge Bob, Scooby Do and a race car lunch box for a nine-year-old boy.

Other items wanted include: books, Spanish-to-English dictionaries, sports equipment, makeup, body and hair-care products, jump ropes, chess games, Scrabble, Trouble, Shoots & Ladders, Barbie dolls and stuffed toys.

There are also instances when moms and dads need to be included in the giving; warm adult clothing, fleece blankets, pajamas, bathrobes and slippers are all items that can keep families warm when trying to conserve and keep heating bills low. Gloves, mittens, scarves and hats are also much-needed items that are good for entire families.

So far 300 children and 100 families are registered with Adopt-A-Family this year, and Moore expects more in the next two weeks.

Adopt-A-Family, which is not-for-profit, is managed through the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation; those who donate are eligible for tax deductions. Moore said she is confident the clothing and food drive will succeed again as it has in the past, despite the poor economic times.

To register or drop off donations call  518-789-4508 or 518-398-0235. Monetary donations may be sent to Adopt-A-Family, PO Box 880, Millerton, NY 12546.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
