All good, clean fun

WASSAIC — The Wassaic Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary held its annual car wash on Saturday morning at the firehouse, along with a bake sale. The event was held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but it was not well attended; by early noon, only a few cars had arrived for washing.

Despite the disappointing turnout, members of the auxiliary said every little bit helps in their fundraising efforts. Nancy Luther, a member of both the fire department and the ladies auxiliary, said the funds raised at the event would be used for the special needs account and holiday events throughout the year.

"We always have a Halloween party that’s open to the public," Luther said. "We always have a Chinese auction in November and in December we have a Christmas holiday event. In August, we will have a community day which will be a chicken barbecue with music, food and fun."

Luther said the event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, although the time is yet to be determined.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
