Come and Gone, Alas

Performed last weekend and gone, “Visiting Mr. Green,” Aglet Theatre Company’s latest production at Dewey Memorial Hall in Sheffield, MA, is done, but the gist of it lingers on. The tale of two men, a reclusive, grouchy, elderly Jew and the younger man, a Jew but a very assimilated one, who visits Mr. Green by court order following a near miss of a traffic accident. This play, written by Jeff Baron and directed by Thomas Gruenewald, is funny, urban, touching and it drills down to the core of a very serious matter for American Jews. Their disappearance. Not by Hitler’s means, but by their own: dropping the customs that have always tied Jews to one another, keeping the tribe alive and meaningful. This is a fine play masterfully performed by Macey Levin and Christopher-Michael Vecchia, aided by chamber pieces by Kurt Weill.

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
