Connecticut State Police Troop B

The following information was provided by the Connecticut State Police at Troop B. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Body found on trail

A hiker on Breadloaf Trail, off Old Sharon Road 2 in Sharon, discovered a body at about 11:40 a.m. March 13. The deceased was identified as Phillip Scourby, 66, of Roxbury, Conn. No evidence of a crime was found. An initial investigation determined  Scourby likely died of natural causes.

Car catches fire

Jacob Foley, 17, of North Canaan was driving north on Route 7 in Sharon March 15. At about 7:35 a.m., the interior of the 1996 Volvo 850 caught fire. Foley pulled over. He and passengers Shawn Cullmer, 16, and Lindsey Cullmer, 15, both of Kent safely evacuated the car before it became fully engulfed. A nearby utility pole was damaged by the fire. The Volvo, registered to Garrett Foley of the same North Canaan address, was severely damaged.

Driver avoids deer, hits pole

Jeannene Shaw, 51, of Millbrook was driving east on Route 112 in Salisbury March 15. At about 11 p.m., she veered right to avoid hitting a deer crossing the road. The 2001 VW Jetta went off the road. It hit a utility pole and a guardrail. It came to rest down a slight embankment. Shaw was taken to Sharon Hospital with minor injuries.

Two-car collision

Jill Holderman, 42, of North Canaan pulled out of a private driveway on Granite Avenue, about 50 feet north of Route 44 in North Canaan, on March 16. At about 9:44 p.m., her 1999 Dodge Caravan collided with a 2006 Honda Pilot driven north on Granite Avenue by Scott Nelson, 41, of Sharon. The minivan sustained front bumper damage. The Honda had damage to the entire left side. There were no injuries to the drivers or Nelson’s passenger, Bianca Kovacs, 32, of Sharon and Holderman’s passengers, Joshua McCue, who turned 13 that day, Matthew Holderman, 12, and Mason Holderman, 8, all of North Canaan. Jill Holderman was charged with unsafe movement.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
