Council holds benefit for scholarship fund

NEW HARTFORD —  On Saturday, Feb. 11, the New Hartford Business Council hosted its third annual Valentine’s Wine and Beer Tasting at the Pine Meadow Firehouse.

The proceeds from the sales at the event went to the New Hartford Business Council Scholarship Fund.

Inside of the firehouse, music provided by Brett Connors contributed to the ambience of the evening.

Guests came to sample wine, beer and spirits, which can all be found at New Hartford Wine and Beverage.

“Some of the vendors serving here tonight are volunteers and some are professional bartenders,” said New Hartford Wine and Beverage owner Jen LeClaire. “It was important for me to be here tonight because my children will one day go to Northwestern Regional School and that’s where the scholarship is awarded.”

One of the volunteer vendors was business council member Peggy Budny. “It’s been a steady crowd,” Budny said. “Lots of people buying tickets at the door, probably because of the uncertainty with the weather.” She explained that all the finger food had been donated by business council members as well as the raffle items. “We tried to make sure that everyone from the council was represented in some way,” Budny said.

Jeff Sharp was one of the vendors at the event representing Cellar Fine Wines in Essex.

“We have beer from four breweries tonight, two of which are in Connecticut,” Sharp said. “We’re here to promote our brands, but also to support our retailer New Hartford Wine and Beverage and also to support the scholarship fund.”

Still from "The King of In between"

There is a scene in “The King of In Between,” a documentary about musician Garland Jeffreys, that shows his name as the answer to a question on the TV show “Jeopardy!”

“This moment was the film in a nutshell,” said Claire Jeffreys, the film’s producer and director, and Garland’s wife of 40 years. “Nobody knows the answer,” she continued. “So, you’re cool enough to be a Jeopardy question, but you’re still obscure enough that not one of the contestants even had a glimmer of the answer.”
