'Eat, drink and be literary'

SHARON — A benefit auction for the Hotchkiss Library will be held at the Sharon Country Club on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The theme of the auction is “Eat, drink and be literary.â€

“The library really needs funding because expenses are going up,†library trustee Dorothy Felske said. “Everything is getting much more expensive. The library only gets a small stipend from the town, so we rely heavily on endowments and contributions. The library always needs money for its annual operating budget. This is why we are doing this auction for the first time. We have never done this before.â€

A wide range of special opportunities will be auctioned at the event, including dinner with actress Lynn Redgrave, dinner with literary agent Lynn Nesbit, a holiday weekend at an apartment in Manhattan and a behind-the-scenes tour of ABC News with correspondent Brian Ross.

Construction on the library began in 1892 and it  opened on Sept. 13, 1893. It was donated to the town by Maria Bissell Hotchkiss in memory of her deceased husband, Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss. The Romanesque Revival structure was designed by one of the foremost architects of the time, Bruce Price. It is believed to be the only Bruce Price building where the major parts of the interior are virtually untouched since its construction.

“The library has not really been renovated nor has it really changed since it was first built,†Felske said. “It’s a unique building, but we do hope to eventually add on to it. We really need more space in the building to bring it into the 21st century. Libraries are changing because they are becoming more and more of a community center. We eventually hope that the Hotchkiss Library will be a community center.â€

The auction will include hors d’oeuvres and a full bar.

Tickets for the event are $75 and are available at the library, which is on Upper Main Street.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
