Eric E. Haight

CLINTON CORNERS — Eric E. Haight, 74, passed away June 13, 2011, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a short illness.He was born in Poughkeepsie on March 29, 1937, the son of the late Thelma (Coffin) and Paul Haight.He was a member of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, Sharon Audubon and the Stanford Historical Society. He also was a former member of Stanford Fire Company. He enjoyed hiking, walking the Rail Trail and bird watching and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mr. Haight coached the Stanford Twins Little League team. Most of all he was a kind and loving man, who put everyone else first. He worked for IBM as a technician in East Fishkill, N.Y. After retirement he and his brother had a lawn mowing service for several years in Stanfordville.Survivors include a loving companion, Diane Eaton of Clinton Corners; a son, Matthew Haight and his companion, Trish Taylor, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Oliver Orton; four nephews, Christopher, Thomas, Irving Paul Haight Jr., and Ryan; and two nieces, Catherine and Allison.He was predeceased by a brother, Irving P. Haight Sr. A memorial service was held June 18 at the United Church of Christ, the Rev. Rhoda Starzyk officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stanford Fire Co., Stanfordville, NY 12581. NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
