Fast cars for Scouts’ annual derby racing

PINE PLAINS — Some sleek racers competed in this year’s Pinewood Derby for Cub Scout Pack 45, held for the first year in the Stissing Mountain Middle/High School gymnasium.

Cub Scouts from four different dens, about 20 racers in total, brought their best designs (both aerodynamically and stylistically) to the track on March 19, where some high-tech computer equipment helped keep track of the results.

Assistant Cub Master John Reilly led the Scouts, who were given special “Pit Passes,” laminated name tags with the racer’s picture alongside some NASCAR-inspired logos.

Scouts jumped for joy upon winning a heat, scratched their heads when asked for their car’s (or truck’s) name and clamored back and forth between their seats and the race track throughout the afternoon.
