Haunted hayride a hot time on a cold night

A crackling bonfire not only set the mood for Sunday’s Halloween hayride, it also generated plenty of heat to offset the cool evening temperatures. The fundraiser for the Salisbury Central School eighth-grade class trip was originally scheduled for Saturday, but heavy rains pushed it ahead to sunny Sunday.

About 70 funseekers still showed up for the rides, and kept two haywagons rumbling up into the woods near the Satre Hill ski jump site. Organizers, though happy with the turnout, felt certain they would have had more visitors if it hadn’t been for the rain delay. High-school volunteers from area public and private schools also cancelled, but eighth-graders stepped in to give ghoulish thrills in the hills.

"I hope future classes will continue this," said organizer Jennifer Good. "It was great, with the bonfire and Nick Noyes singing and playing guitar."

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
