High winds topple trees, damages area home

AMENIA — Heavy winds and rain on Friday afternoon led to two 80-foot trees falling on top of a house on Broadway, just south of the main light in the town of Amenia. The felled trees damaged the house, ripping a big hole in the roof.

House owner Steven Walien said that he and his wife, Christine, were away on a trip when a neighbor called his in-laws.

“The trees just went through the roof, and there’s water inside, Walien said. “Part of the chimney is down and it’s all a mess.

The trees were still being cut apart from the house on Friday as the family assessed damages to their property. Walien said that the majority of the damage was to a new addition to the house that was recently completed. He could not give a financial estimate of damages to the property.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
