Lions Club fundraiser this Saturday

MILLERTON — The Millerton Lions Club is holding a chicken barbecue at American Legion Post 178 this Saturday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m.

This is the first year the club has held a chicken barbecue. It’s meant to replace the annual circus, which the organization is unable to hold this year, explained Second Vice President Stacey Moore.

“We’re trying something new instead, she said.

Chicken will be cooked by the Ancram Fire Company, which “does a great dinner, according to Moore. Accompanying the chicken will be potato salad, sweet corn, cole slaw and brownies. Soda, water and coffee will quench thirsts, and for the more mature audience alcoholic beverages will be available through the Legion’s bar.

Whether eating in or taking out, tickets are $20. But with a silent auction running all evening (with winners announced between 6 and 7 p.m.), chances are you’ll want to sit down with the family for a chance to win gift certificates, handmade items and other assorted items donated by most of the area’s local merchants.

All proceeds from the dinner will go toward funding various Lions Club activities throughout the year. The Lions Club is involved with providing sight and hearing support for local residents, buying eye glasses and hearing aids for those in need and much more.

“We support a lot of organizations like Grace Smith House [a domestic violence shelter], the local food pantry, Adopt-a-Family, baseball programs, fire and ambulance services, the diabetes walk-a-thon and annual scholarships, said Moore. Last year’s scholarship awarded $4,000 to graduating seniors. “Every penny raised gets put back into the community.

Moore acknowledged that it would be difficult to raise as much funds as the circus would, but they are hoping for $5,000. That translates to around 150 to 200 chicken dinners. A hundred tickets have already been sold.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or through Saperstein’s on Main Street or Moore and More Printing on Dutchess Avenue.

“We’ve already gotten sponsors for the event, Moore said. “Merchants are coming through, and we’re thanking them in advance.

If anyone wishes to make a donation to the Lions Club, checks can be sent to The Millerton Lions Club, PO Box 473, Millerton, NY 12546.

Many nonprofit organizations in the area are supported through help from the Lions Club, including the NorthEast-Millerton Free Library and Guiding Eyes For The Blind.

Any additional information can be found through Moore at 518-789-4508.

“It’s important to support the Lions Club, she said. “They’re instilling in the community the support for sight, hearing and diabetes. Every nonprofit organization that needs help is filtered through us.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
