Marion Edith Case

EAST CANAAN — Marion Edith Case, 89, died Dec. 29, 2009, at Sharon Hospital, surrounded by her daughters. She was the widow of M. Robert Case of Rangeley, Maine, and of William Marvin Taylor of Norfolk.

She was born at home in East Norwalk, Conn., on Sept. 26,1920, the fourth child of Anna (Grant) and Charles T. MacDonald.

At the age of 16, Edith graduated from Norwalk High School in the class of 1937. She attended the New York School of Interior Design, worked in several Norwalk offices and retired from the Norfolk office of physician Richard I. Barstow.

Edith’s true joy was her family and she delighted in having her mother, Anna Grant MacDonald, reside with her until Anna’s death at age 96. She enjoyed residing in Maine, traveling, listening to NPR, audio books and classical music, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.

Her wit, patient listening and love of lively conversation will be sorely missed. Most recently she was a member of the Church of Christ Congregational in Norfolk. Her strong Christian faith and resilience in the face of challenge were an inspiration to all.

She was predeceased by three siblings, Myrtle Eleanor, Charles Grant “ChickMacDonald and Arthur Herbert “Art MacDonald; a son-in-law, Raymond Marrero; and her grandson, Samuel Packard.

In celebration of Edith’s life, family and friends will gather for a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1  p.m. at the Church of Christ Congregational in Norfolk.  A reception in Battell Chapel will follow the service. In the event of severe winter weather, the service will be postponed until Jan. 23. (Call the church office at 860-542-5721). Burial will take place in South Norfolk Cemetery in the spring.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
