Murder suspect caught in Winsted

WINSTED — After an extensive manhunt, Scott Gellatly, 46, a suspect in a murder case in Oxford, was apprehended at the former KFC restaurant on New Hartford Road on Wednesday, May 7, just after 11:30 a.m.Winchester area schools, including The Gilbert School, Northwestern Regional 7 and Northwestern Connecticut Community College, according to school officials, had students and employees shelter in place Wednesday morning while the Connecticut State Police searched for Gellatly in the region. At press conferences held Wednesday throughout the morning, State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance provided information on the search for the suspect. Vance said Gellatly was taken into custody without incident late Wednesday morning, while attempting to commit suicide by rigging a hose and a vehicle to result in carbon monoxide poisoning. Vance confirmed that the suspect was in stable condition, and in a release said Gellatly was at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington under police guard. According to Vance, Gellatly is suspected of shooting two women at the house of his estranged wife at 43 Sioux Drive in Oxford.He said the two victims were transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital and Waterbury Hospital.One of the victims, Gellatly’s estranged wife, Lori Gellatly, 32, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Waterbury Hospital.The other victim, identified by police as Lori Gallatly’s mother, Mary Jackson, remained in serious condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.A restraining order of protection was filed by Lori Gellatly against Scott Gellatly with the State Superior Court in Milford on April 24 and was signed by Judge Robert Malone.At around 9 a.m., State Police search units, including helicopters and police cars, were seen throughout Winsted.At 8:52 a.m. Pearson Middle School Principal Matthew O’Connell sent an email to district parents that said the police department had requested the administration keep students inside the building.“About 10 minutes ago we were asked by the Winchester Police Department to keep our students inside the building,” O’Connell wrote. “The reason being that there was a shooting this morning in Oxford. The police indicated to me that the cell phone of someone involved was ‘pinging’ in the Winsted area.”At 10:39 a.m. Wednesday, according to another email sent to parents by O’Connell, precautions were lifted and the school day went back to normal.Students and community members of NCCC were sent text messages from the school that classes were canceled during the day.Calls to school district Superintendent Thomas Danehy and Winsted Police Chief Robert Scannell were not returned by press time.According to a State Police press release, Gellatly has been charged with murder, attempted murder, larceny of a motor vehicle, assault in the first degree of an elderly person, two counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.He is being held on a $2 million bond and was scheduled to have been arraigned in Derby Superior Court on Thursday, May 8.Further information will be added to this story as it becomes available, at www.tricornernews.com.

NORTH CANAAN – An adult man drowned Saturday afternoon, June 6, after a kayak overturned in a private pond behind Freund’s Farm Market and Bakery.

The man was the sole occupant of the kayak, according to officials. DEEP Environmental Conservation Police (EnCon) responded along with North Canaan emergency responders and Connecticut State Police Troop B.

SHARON — Yerger Johnstone, former managing director in the mergers and acquisitions department at Morgan Stanley and a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, died on April 19, 2026, in Chelmsford, England. He was 86.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, on March 7, 1940, Mr. Johnstone was the son of architect Henry Inge Johnstone, architect, and Kathleen Yerger Johnstone, the noted nature writer and civic leader after whom Alabama’s state seashell, Johnstone’s Junonia, is named. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile in 1958, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of the South at Sewanee in 1962, and earned his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1964.

SHARON — Floyd Irving Isham Jr., 87, a longtime area resident, died Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon. Mr. Isham worked for the Tri-Wall Container Corp. in Wassaic, New York, for fifteen years and also worked as a self-employed private caretaker for over twenty-five years, caring for local estates in Shekomeko, Pine Plains and Ancramdale, New York, prior to his retirement.

Born Aug. 25, 1938, in St. George, Vermont, he was the son of the late Floyd Irving and Hazel (Thompson) Isham, Sr. Following his high school years, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1961. Mr. Isham also served in the Vermont National Guard. On Aug. 11, 1990, in Dover Plains, New York, he married Nancy L. Cross. Mrs. Isham died on July 8, 2005.

She was the wife of the late Duane Garfield who passed August 14, 2017. Pauline was born April 3, 1932 in North Canaan,in the former Geer Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Van Vlack) King.

Pauline spent her career at Becton Dickinson in Canaan, after being a stay-at-home mother for many years.She was employed at Becton Dickinson for 23 years. She enjoyed bus trips with her late husband Duane to the Casinos, spending time with her family watching the grandchildren grow up. Recently she made a comment to care givers that was “wait until I see that husband of mine for leaving me here, I am going to read him the riot act.” Over the years she enjoyed many crafts, but her favorite was crocheting gifts for everyone.

Tail wags, floppy ears and a healthy dose of canine charm will take center stage June 7 as The Little Guild hosts its annual Great Country Mutt Show at Lime Rock Park in Falls Village.

Last year’s Great Country Mutt Show attracted more than 200 dogs and 800 people. Founded by renowned designer Bunny Williams as a benefit for the Little Guild, the tongue-in-cheek, Westminster-style event has grown into one of the organization’s signature annual fundraisers and community celebrations. The show remains free and open to the public, and adoptable dogs may attend when appropriate.
