Housatonic hockey on a weekend roller coaster ride

FALLS VILLAGE — It was a wild weekend for the Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys ice hockey team, with a tough overtime loss on Friday, Jan. 30, and a triumphant win on Saturday, Jan. 31.

On Friday night, the team played Newington/Berlin and lost in overtime, 3-2.

“It hurt, Coach Dean Diamond said. “We had 38 seconds left on the clock when they got that last shot in. Basically, we didn’t play that well. We could have played a lot better. By the end of the first period, no one had scored anything.

But then Ethan Couch scored his first goal of the season, with assists by Matt Lancto and Doug Holmes. Then Lancto scored a goal with an assist by Chris Bellanca. The team lead, 2-1, but that’s when everything went downhill for Housy.

“At the beginning of the third period, we gave up a shot during a power play, Diamond said. “That’s when we all started to hurt. We went into overtime and we outshot the other team, but we just could not find that hole. We ended up giving them the winning goal in a face off. It was a tough loss.

However, on Saturday night, when the team played against Rocky Hill, the team bounced right back. Diamond said facing Rocky Hill may have been intimidating and the team knew it was going to be a tough game, but everyone was up for the challenge.

“We scored right from the first shift, with Matt Lancto getting his fourth goal of the season, Diamond said. “Then during the second period, Zach Vitali scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Chris Bellanca and Ollie Fox. Then Bellanca got a goal, ending the half 3-1.

In the second half, with five minutes left in the third, Sam LeGeyt scored his ninth goal of the season, with an assist by Doug Holmes.

The team had a 4-2 lead, until Rocky Hill came fighting back and scored a goal, making it 4-3.

“We had to fight them off for the rest of the game, Diamond said. “We won 4-3, with goalie Kevin Diamond making 32 saves during the game.

As of Monday, the team is in first place in the Southern Division of the Northwestern Hockey Conference, and Diamond said he intends to keep it that way.

The team will play this Friday at the Bolton Ice Palace against the Bolton-Coventry-Lyman team, followed by another away game on Wednesday against Joel Barlow at the Danbury Ice Arena.
