Pink's NFL Picks : December 10, 2009

Last week’s record, 10-6; for the season, 123-69

Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 10-3

It seems as if I’m stuck in average mode, but I feel I should be doing better at this point in the season. My beloved Steelers have now hit rock bottom and that certainly hurts, but the overall parity in the league has made picking winners a bit tougher. I did get my Pick of the Week and I was right on with the Giants and the Dolphins, but I’m just not satisfied with my record. I need a good week. I feel a good one coming on, so let’s get on with it.

Thursday, Dec. 10

Pittsburgh at Cleveland — The Steelers are in trouble and this game is no gimme. The Browns have settled on Brady Quinn at quarterback and the offense is beginning to show some signs of life. As for the Steelers, their defense is what has been killing them. I’m not convinced the Steelers are dead, so I’ll stick with them, 23-19.

Sunday, Dec. 13

Green Bay at Chicago — Coming off a short week and playing on the road can be key ingredients for an upset. Jay Cutler has been a flop for the Bears, while Aaron Rodgers has been outstanding for the Packers. There may be an upset here, but I’m sticking with the Packers, 24-20.

Seattle at Houston — Both of these teams’ chances of making the playoffs are dwindling fast, and the loser of this game will be out of the playoff picture. With that said, Seattle is usually awful on the road, and the Texans are due for a big home win. I’ll go with Houston, 24-17.

Detroit at Baltimore — This time of the year is all about making the playoffs. Detroit will not, but the Ravens still have a chance. Baltimore wins this one, 27-13.

New Orleans at Atlanta — The Falcons are banged up at QB and that hurts their chances for an upset. The Saints continue to find ways to win and they will do it again this week, 33-20.

Buffalo at Kansas City — Both of these teams have had their moments, just not enough of them. To me, this game comes down to playing well in front of the home fans, and I think the Chiefs will. I like the Chiefs, 20-17.

Denver at Indianapolis — I keep waiting for the Colts to falter but it hasn’t happened as of yet. Denver has rebounded nicely in the last two weeks but will have little chance of winning three in a row. I’ll stick with Peyton Manning and the Colts, 31-23.

Carolina at New England — I’m sure that the Patriots are glad to be playing at home because they need a win. Carolina is one of those unpredictable teams I have trouble getting a read on, but I can’t see the Patriots losing three in a row. I’ll stick with the Brady Bunch as my Pick of the Week, 30-24.

N.Y. Jets at Tampa Bay — With the Patriots slumping, the Jets and Dolphins find themselves in the thick of the AFC East Division race. With that said, the unpredictable Jets should be able to pick up a “W in this one. I like the Jets, 23-17.

Miami at Jacksonville — Just when the Dolphins get back in the playoff hunt, now they must travel upstate to face a tough Jacksonville team that is very much in the playoff picture. I really like what Chad Henne has done for the Dolphins at quarterback and the resurgence of Ricky Williams. I’ll take Miami, 23-21.

Cincinnati at Minnesota — Both of these teams are headed to the playoffs due in large part to the play of their respective quarterbacks and their defenses. The bottom line is the Vikings score more points and are undefeated at home. The Bengals will play tough, but in the end I think the Vikings prevail, 27-24.

St. Louis at Tennessee — The Titans are still alive — barely — but that should be enough incentive for Vince Young and company to pick up another win. I’ll take Tennessee, 30-17.

Washington at Oakland — These are two teams that are out of the playoffs, but both are showing signs of getting better. The Redskins have lost a number of tough games and if they had any type of offense they could possibly be in the playoff hunt. However, the Raiders are coming off a huge win over the Steelers and should be ready at home. I’ll take the Raiders, 20-17.

San Diego at Dallas — This is a big game for the Chargers but a huge one for the Cowboys. I like Rivers much more than Romo. Everyone is telling the Cowboys they stink in December, and I think they are starting to believe it. This should be a dynamite game. In the end, I see the Chargers coming out on top, 37-33.

Philadelphia at N.Y. Giants — Both teams are coming off big wins, but I’m not quite sold on either, especially the Giants. It seems to me that the Eagles have the Giants’ number and at this point in the season they may have the better team. I have to go against one of my teams, but I think the Eagles win, 26-20.

Monday, Dec. 14

Arizona at San Francisco — The Cards looked like a Super Bowl team in victory over the Vikings, but from week to week they are still one of the more unpredictable good teams in the league. The 49ers will play tough and need a win to stay in the playoff picture. I’ll stick with the Niners, 23-21.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
