Town Board focuses on building, zoning and planning

NORTH EAST — The Town Board discussed all things planning, building and zoning at its business meeting on Thursday, Feb. 17, when North East Building Inspector Ken McLaughlin appeared before the board to give his department’s monthly report.McLaughlin first expressed his thanks to the board for getting his office and the town on the same page.“First of all, I would like to say a thank you to [Councilman] Dave McGhee for raising the issue of where the community is going for the planning, building and zoning departments,” he said. “The town is at a crossroads, and it’s important to look at where we’re going. It’s important to have firm procedures in place and [they] will be implemented in a fair and evenhanded way.”McLaughlin added that the zoning committee recently met with the town’s attorney and was making progress. He said it had been a long time since those codes had been reviewed.Town Supervisor Dave Sherman agreed progress was being made.“I had asked the department heads from the building, planning and zoning departments to meet and asked [building, planning and zoning secretary] Lisa [Cope] to be there, with counselor [Warren Replansky] and [Councilman] Dave McGhee, communicating and understanding each others’ roles and coordinating with each other,” Sherman said. “I’m encouraged that we’re doing this on a monthly basis. We talked with Ken regarding potential amendments to our codes … there has been some product coming out of this so far.”Sherman went on to say the board adopted a new sign ordinance in the fall and that some of the departments worked together to photograph all of the town’s signs at the time.“We’re also working on developing policies and procedures in the office,” he said, adding those are also being filed with the proper agencies.“We’re moving in a positive direction,” Councilman Steve Merwin said. “We also probably have some of the biggest projects the town has faced in decades,” McLaughlin said. “Not everybody is going to agree. What everybody has to have is mutual respect … and honest discussion.”

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
