SALISBURY — A spectacular fire early Wednesday claimed the lives of 70 cows as it destroyed a picturesque old barn on the Belter Brothers Farm on the Lime Rock Road. A brand new $20,000 tractor was lost in the barn, and substantial corn silage stored nearby also was destroyed. Firemen were able, however, to save a shed adjacent to the barn that contained many of the farm tools.

A Lakeville Hose Co. fire truck was badly damaged and one fireman was slightly injured in an accident on Between-the-Lakes Road in Salisbury early Sunday morning. A dirt embankment along the West Twin Lake side of the dirt road gave way as the 22-year-old Ford truck moved to the right to avoid an oncoming vehicle, according to State Police.

The fire truck overturned and landed on its roof in three to four feet of water. Mike Golden, 21, a passenger, was slightly injured when he left the cab through a broken window. The vehicle’s cab was filling with water as Mr. Golden kicked the window out and then returned from the shore to aid William M. Whitbeck, who was driving the fire truck.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
