Vincent C. Crawford

MILLERTON — Vincent C. Crawford, 96, formerly of Millerton, died in Crossville, Tenn., on Feb. 16, 2007.

A 92-year resident of Millerton, he moved to Tennessee in 2002 to be with his son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Nancy.

Born June 2, 1910, in Fishkill, N.Y., he was the son of Margaret (Conway) and William Crawford.

On July 3, 1928, he married the former Anna Sheehan. His wife of 65 years, she died in 1993.

Mr. Crawford worked for Suburban Propane for 36 years and retired in 1973. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Millerton.

A well-known athlete throughout Dutchess County, he was a member of the County Baseball and Basketball Hall of Fame, and played with such greats as Wes Westrum (former Giants catcher and manager of the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants), Hank Sauer (Chicago Cubs) and Chuck Connors, who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (and also played "The Rifleman" in the television series).

While serving in the U.S. Army at West Point, Mr. Crawford was instrumental in getting Mr. Westrum and Mr. Connors to play basketball in this area. In 1928, he played for the Boston Red Sox farm team in Danville, Va. Until his passing, he was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves.

When he was well into middle age, while playing along with several local softball teams, he hit a foul ball the proverbial "country mile," taking out the windshield of a supposedly safely parked fan’s car. His comment was, "I’m sorry about Clark’s window, but it feels good to be able to still hit. I think it’s all in my wrists."

In addition to his son, William and daughter-in-law, Nancy, of Crossville, Mr. Crawford is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by 12 siblings.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Feb. 20 at St. Patrick Church in Millerton, the Rev. John Durkin officiating.

Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton.

Contributions in Mr. Crawford’s memory may be made to the Millerton Fire Department, Millerton, NY 12546.
