Affordable housing on the rise here

SALISBURY — Four weeks ago, workers began laying the concrete foundation for a house — not just any house, but a new home for the Salisbury Housing Trust, a nonprofit volunteer group dedicated to providing affordable houses for local residents.

This week, the roofs were craned to the top of the nearly completed homes as future residents Morgan, Jacob and Joe Lamb watched their house being built before their very eyes. It was an exciting finish to the year-long process that began with waiting lists and loan applications.

The Lambs (with mom Christine) will move into their new home in about three months, thanks to the Housing Trust, which has built and renovated eight moderately priced houses on land off Route 41, just past the Salisbury cemetery.

The organization “does not charge for underground utilities and land, said vice president and founding director Digby Brown. The homeowners pay for the cost of the house itself. The trust retains ownership of the land.

When asked about the progress of the construction, Brown said, “We’re doing fine here.â€ The house, valued at around $180,000, is a modular home.

Joe Lamb said he is “very excited and can’t wait... I am looking forward to everything.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
