Alumni soccer game first weekend in October

WEBUTUCK — The Webutuck Booster Club will host quite a few events on Oct. 2, which is the school’s Community Day and the culminating day of Webutuck’s Spirit Week.

Two soccer games have been rescheduled for that Saturday, including a girls varsity game at 10 a.m. and a boys varsity game at noon. Both teams will be playing Pine Plains.

Following the boys game, the second annual Webutuck co-ed alumni game will be held at 2  p.m., featuring Webutuck graduates of all ages squaring off on their former turf. Joe Matteo will officiate the match.

“Many of the alumni playing are also coaches in the Webutuck Youth Valley Soccer league,†Booster Club President Michele Adrian explained, “who will be heading over after their Saturday morning games, so we’re encouraging parents to bring their kids to see their own coaches play.â€

Registration for the alumni game   will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 at the field. A $10 donation is requested to play.

The Booster Club will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and meatball subs, like it did last year, during the games. But it’s also mixing things up a bit and adding a chili cook-off and an apple pie baking contest.

Entrance fees are $5 per pie and $30 for chili, with prizes awarded for the winners. For rules and registration, call Adrian at 845-373-9916 or e-mail her at yoadrian4@hotmail.com.

“The idea is community involvement,†she said. “Come down, see the games, support the athletes and students. It doesn’t cost anything to attend, and we’d love to see everyone in green.â€

All proceeds will benefit the Booster Club, which provides for food and trophies at each season’s sports awards banquet. The club also awards scholarships to graduating athletes and picks up the check for unexpected athletic expenses, like sending players to state competitions.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
