Amenia Monarchs vs. Winsted Whalers: Round one of playoff series

AMENIA — The Amenia Monarchs have advanced to the second round of the Tri-State League playoffs.  Amenia bested the Winsted Whalers, two games to none, in a first-round, three-game series. The series sweep was sweet revenge for the Monarchs, who fell to the Whalers by a run in the regular season finale.

Colby Dunlop took the mound on the road in the series opener and dominated from start to finish. The University of Connecticut-bound pitcher tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout, striking out 12 and walking just two en route to the Monarchs’ 3-0 victory.

“Colby pitched an unbelievable game,” said Manager Tom Downey Jr.

At the plate, Amenia’s shortstop, Chris Reed, tallied half of the team’s hits, going 3-4 on the afternoon.

The game was even until the top of the sixth, when Lashawn Thrasher scored on a fielder’s choice, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Tyler Smith padded the lead with a one-out, two RBI single in the seventh.

At Doc Bartlett Field, game two, a slug-fest, was a near clone of the regular season finale played between the two teams.  A large crowd on hand watched the clubs combine for 23 hits and 15 runs in the back and forth affair. On this day, however, the Monarchs prevailed, 8-7, ending the Whalers’ season and giving them plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the summer.

The visitors jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on five consecutive, two-out singles off Amenia starter Mackenzie Dunlop.

Unlike the regular season finale, the Monarchs did not waste much time getting back on the board, scoring three runs in the second to knot the game 3-3.

Trailing 6-3, the Monarchs scored twice in the sixth, twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to carry an 8-6 lead into the ninth.

Winsted mounted a rally in the ninth, getting within a run of tying the game and loading the bases with no outs against winning pitcher Lashawn Thrasher, who replaced Dunlop in the sixth. Manager Downey called on Chris Reed to get the Monarchs out of the jam. Reed set the next three Whalers down in order with just 12 pitches to get the save and send the Monarchs on to the second round for the first time in several years.

Thrasher and Mackenzie Dunlop had three hits apiece for the home-side.  Dunlop also had two RBI.  Reed notched a pair of hits and a RBI.

Downey was pleased with the team’s play, highlighting the balanced offense throughout the series.

The Monarchs will face juggernaut Watertown, the defending Tri-State League Champion and two-time Stan Musial State Champion. The Blaze and Monarchs will face off in a 5:30 p.m. game at Deland Field in Watertown on Friday, Aug. 11.

Despite losing to Watertown 4-0 earlier in the season, Downey is feeling confident about his club, as the players now know what they’re up against.

“My guys are young, they’re chomping at the bit, and they want to go against the best team in the league and prove themselves a little bit. I think it’s going to be a really good game.”

Win or lose, the Monarchs will play again on Saturday, Aug. 12, weather permitting, as the tournament now takes on an eight team, Round Robin format.  It’s possible Saturday’s game could be a 1 p.m. home game for the Monarchs.  Fans should check the Tri-State League website, www.tristatebaseballct.com, Saturday morning to find out exactly where and when the Monarchs will be playing.
