Annual town budget meeting Monday

WINSTED — Winsted voters will have a chance to make cuts to line items in the proposed 2010-11 town budget on Monday, May 3, 7 p.m., at the annual town budget meeting in the auditorium at The Gilbert School.

The proposed budget of $31,663,149 includes a school budget of $21.3 million and represents a .64-mill increase over the current year. Voters are allowed to make cuts to individual line items in the budget and a signup sheet will be available for residents who wish to speak. Line items may not be increased at the annual town budget meeting.

In a written budget presentation, Town Manager Wayne Dove puts the town’s total spending for 2010-11 at $36,835,133, including all additional revenues and water and sewer fees, in the total. The mill rate for the town, according to the budget proposal, will increase from 24.67 to 25.31.

Under the current proposal, taxes account for the largest portion (55 percent) of overall revenues, followed by funding from the state (32 percent), water and sewer rates (10 percent) and local town revenues (3 percent).

Monday night’s annual town budget meeting will be preceded by a regular meeting of the Winchester Board of Selectmen. The budget meeting will adjourn to a referendum, the date of which will be announced that night.
