Artists open studios for annual tour

WASSAIC — The Wassaic Project hosted an open studio event on Saturday, Sept. 17, to kick off the ArtEast Open Studio Tour that will be held two weekends in October. This is the fifth annual free tour of artist studios in eastern Dutchess County. The tour features the studios of more than 30 artists working in a wide variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media. The event introduces the public to the dozens of artists working in the community while also giving people the opportunity to witness the creative process and learn about the things that inspire artists, said Joan Diadone, one of the event organizers.“People don’t have to go to the city to see great art,” she said. “We have plenty here, too.”Diadone said one of the main goals of the ArtEast tour is “to get people to know that this is really an incredible area for art.”While this area has historically been overlooked as an artist haven in favor of the towns along the Hudson with an artsy reputation, Diadone believes that eastern Dutchess is quickly becoming a destination for people looking to discover new art.Peter Cascone, one of the participating artists, said the ArtEast tours inspire him to create new work and give him the chance to connect with other artists. The tours also allow him to show off pieces of his work that wouldn’t otherwise leave the studio and see the reaction of the public to his works in progress.“The public likes work that are different than the ones I thought,” he said. “I’m always surprised by what people like.”The open studio event will take place in northeast Dutchess on the weekend of Oct. 15 and 16 and in southeast Dutchess on the weekend of Oct. 22 and 23.For more information about the event, including information about the artists, visit www.arteastdutchess.com.
