Benefit for Winchester School district’s PTO

WINSTED and TORRINGTON — The Winchester School district’s PTO held a benefit pancake breakfast on Saturday, June 13, at Applebee’s Restaurant at 1690 East Main St.

Members of the PTO and Winchester District school students all volunteered to serve breakfast to customers.

“During one of our first meetings, someone spoke about the ‘flapjack fundraisers’ that they have at Applebee’s,” Kris Smith, co-president of the PTO, said at the event. “In November, we requested dates when we could have the fundraiser, but the restaurant was not available until June.”

Smith said that proceeds from a portion of ticket sales for the event will go to the PTO.

“We hold several events during the year,” she said. “We provide for field trips and yearbooks. Sadly, we could not provide funding for yearbooks this year. It’s sad because we have not had a great return on fundraisers this year. It’s rough all around everywhere, and we understand that.”

Smith said that the PTO also provides funds for school equipment, including Smart Boards for classrooms.

“It was something that the Board of Education could not provide for,” Smith said. “We have a lot of other goals we want to provide for kids. So parents work together to catch up on the shortfalls of school funding. We fill in wherever we can.”

“It’s a great organization that helps the teachers, the students and everybody in the school community,” group member Jennifer Hale said. “We need more parent volunteers for our group. If you can’t make it to the meetings, we can always use help at our fundraisers.”

Smith added that the PTO always is looking for donations and volunteers
