Big smiles, heavy hearts for Class of 2016 at stepup day

LAKEVILLE — The 29 members of the Salisbury Central School (SCS) Class of 2016 received their certificates on Wednesday, June 15.

Molly O’Connor said that during her time at SCS, she never seemed to have enough pencils, despite buying a fresh supply every year.

“Pencils are like people — they come in many shapes and sizes, and they’re all great.”

She and her classmates will now “write the next chapter of our lives.

“But before you start, make sure you have enough pencils.”

Elijah Stone spoke about the relationships he formed during his time at the school — in particular his kindergarten mentee.

Elijah and the youngster were playing on the basketball court, and the smaller boy made a shot and exclaimed, “I can’t wait until I’m in eighth grade! We’ll be on the same team!”

Madisyn Gomez described practicing for the high jump in gym class.

One boy asked that the bar be set very high, and as he approached the bar, he hesitated at the last moment and knocked the bar down.

But the boy got back in line and tried again.

“And guess what? He made it.

“His leap of faith was just like our time here at SCS.

She said she leaves the school with “a bright smile and heavy heart.”

SCS Principal Lisa Carter positioned the lectern so she could speak to the students directly.

“You are a strong group of individuals who can learn with and care for each other,” she told them.

And she finished her remarks with a quote from Jane Addams: “The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.”
