WINSTED — Thanks to a grant from the state’s Department of Transportation (DOT), the McCarthy Senior Center has purchased a new van.

According to Ellen Schroeder, director of the senior center, the 2010 Ford van was paid for thanks to a matching grant from the DOT.

The van cost $48,486 and the DOT paid for 80 percent of it while the town paid for the rest.

“The old van we had used up its lifecycle, Schroeder said. “It was time to replace it. She said the senior center uses the van for approximately 125 rides a week to take seniors on local trips.

“Every year the DOT provides us with an application for a grant, Schroeder said. “We got lucky this time around.

Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
