BOE organizes for 2017-18

MILLBROOK— A new president and vice president were sworn in at the Millbrook Board of Education (BOE) organizational meeting on Monday, July 10.

After the meeting was opened by District Clerk Mary Lou Janelli, the board unanimously voted former Vice President John Rudy to the position of president, and board member Thomas Lehmkuhl to the office of vice president. Janelli swore them both in.

Lehmkuhl was re-elected to the board in the election last May. Howard Shapiro, who was elected for his first term in office in May, was also sworn in.

Rudy commented on taking over following former long-time President Thomas Hurley’s many years in office. Hurley decided not to rerun for office this year.

“Tom left big shoes to fill after 22 years,” Rudy said. “I’ll appreciate your support and your feedback.”

The next order of business was to appoint committee members and board liaisons. The board agreed filling such positions is of comfort to both district workers and district residents during the course of the school year.

Superintendent of Schools Phillip D’Angelo gave a report on the district goals of all four schools for the 2017–18 school year. D’Angelo will meet with school principals and teachers to discuss the goals, and will then present the results of those meetings to the BOE at its next meeting.

Shaw, Perelson, May & Lambert, LLP, and Alan Rappleyea of Corbally, Gartland and Rappleyea, LLP, were named as school attorneys.

It was stated that the anticipated masonry work at Alden Place Elementary School will go forward. A bid of $175,000, $20,000 less than originally expected, was accepted. The bid for the masonry restoration and metal siding project was awarded to Mid-State of Schenectady, according to the bid report.

Two new hires were announced: Brenden Lee, physics teacher, and Lila Simon, per diem junior accountant. Other appointments were made, and  can be found on the board’s web site, www.millbrookcsd.org.

The official newspapers remain The Millerton News and the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Donations were accepted from the Union Vale Fire Department for a 3D printer valued at $1,290, from its Community Support Fund. A second donation was accepted from The Chapin School, an all-girls independent day school located in New York City, for scientific equipment valued at $2,788.

The New York State School Board Association will convene in Lake Placid on Oct. 12 through Oct. 14, and four board members will attend.

Lunch and breakfast prices were set. Breakfast will be $2 for high school students and $1.75 for the middle school, Alden Place and Elm Drive elementary schools. Lunch prices will remain at $3.25 for the high school and middle school. The elementary schools will see an increase of 10 cents, up from $2.75 to $2.85

A steady decline in the number of students — in Millbrook and beyond — inspired talk of a facilities management study, as well as studies in other areas.

The final enrollment report for the 2016–17 school year showed 184 students enrolled in Elm Drive Elementary, 211 in Alden Place Elementary, 242 in Millbrook Middle School and 318 in Millbrook High School.

BOE meeting nights will remain the first and third Mondays of the month, excepting for holidays. The time remains 7 p.m. and unless otherwise notified, meetings take place in the middle school.
