Championship results, club marks 30th anniversary

BOSTON CORNER— Undermountain Golf Course held its Club Championship Tournament Sunday, Sept. 9. Undermountain members helped celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary. Pin placements were set at their most difficult locations and co-superintendents Jack Shakshober and John MacArthur had conditions finely groomed for the season’s final 18-hole competition. The field of 65 members was divided into numerous flights determined by handicap, gender and age.

Men’s Club Champion Honors this year’s were awarded to John Lyman of Millerton. Lyman posted a five over par 70 gross score. In the senior division the men’s title was decided by a sudden death play-off between Chris Dakin,  Salisbury, Conn., and Fred Murnane, Copake. Both players scored 72 in regulation play with Dakin prevailing in the play-off.

The Women’s Senior Honors were awarded to Doris Griffin, West Copake, who scored 80, the lowest gross score for women in all divisions. The women’s title, also decided in sudden death, went to a former champion, April Petkovich, Dover Plains, who shot 83 to win the women’s trophy. Petkovich beat Trish MacArthur on the first hole of the play—off.

Division winners will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy in Undermountain’s clubhouse. Winner of the overall low net for the day has his name inscribed on the Shakshober Trophy. This year’s winner was Bill Anstett, who posted a 58 net for 18 holes.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
