Co-op and art bar to open at Lambert Kay site

WINSTED — Almost two months after purchasing the former Lambert Kay property, Parker Benjamin Real Estate Services of Unionville, Conn., has announced two new reservations for spaces in the building.

“Seventy percent of the first floor of the building has now been reserved,” Parker Benjamin managing broker Brian Lyman  said. “We still have space on both the first and second floors.”

Winsted residents approved the purchase of the property at a special town meeting 15 years ago, after the Lambert Kay company went out of business.

Since then, plans have been made to renovate the property but all have fallen through.

At a special town meeting in July, taxpayers approved Parker Benjamin’s purchase of the property for $1,000.

At that town meeting, the company announced that Little Red Barn Brewers of Barkhamsted had already signed up for a space.

Last week, the company announced two more possible tenants: The Mad River Market Co-Op and Scene Art Bar.

The Mad River Market Co-Op formed in April after the Winsted Super Saver IGA grocery store went out of business.

Co-op Secretary and Economic Development Commission Chairman Phillip Allen said the market will take 7,500 square feet of space on the ground floor and 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of storage and office space on the second floor.

He said he hopes the co-op will open next summer. So far, only 70 of the available 200 shares have been sold.

Lyman, the Parker Benjamin broker, said that the Scene Art Bar will open up around the same time as the co-op

The business already has one location in Unionville. Its website at www.sceneartbar.com says it offers art classes and serves wine and beer.

Lyman added that the property will now be known as the Winsted Edge Works.

“It is named after the second occupant of the building which was there in the 1860s,” Lyman said.
