Crash at accounting office under investigation

NORTH CANAAN — It may be the busy tax season, but that’s not a drive-through under construction at Riccardelli Accounting.A client pulling into the business at 10 E. Main St./Route 44 on March 21 crashed into the front porch a little after 2 p.m. Edward Kaunelis, 86, of Geer Village in North Canaan took a right into the small parking area at the front of the building when it appears he may have hit the accelerator instead of the brakes on his Toyota Highlander, according to what he told workers there. He was not injured.Owner Karen Riccardelli said the crash was loud but it appeared the only damage was to Kaunelis’ car and a non-structural section of the porch between two columns.“There was a snowbank in front of the porch that lifted his car up so it hit wood and stucco instead of concrete below,” Riccardelli said. “An inch either way and he would have hit the cement columns.”He also narrowly missed another parked car.The accident remains under investigation.
