Dogswalk Against Cancer

BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. — The American Cancer Society invites dogs and their owners to the Dogswalk Against Cancer.

Your mission: To participate in the American Cancer Society’s 17th annual Dogswalk Against Cancer Sunday, May 3,  at New York’s Bear Mountain Park. Dogs of every size, shape and color will be there. Last year there were almost 1,000 dogs and 3,000 people. They came from near and far, including the Hudson River Valley, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.  All for the purpose of celebrating life and fighting human and canine cancers.

The Dogswalk Against Cancer begins with a non-competitive walk around Hessian Lake. There are no maximum or minimum amounts to raise, and those with pledges of $500 or more will receive the Golden Bone Award.

Last year the Dogswalk raised almost $110,000 of critically needed funds to support research, education and to improve the quality of life for those with cancer. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine since cancer affects both humans and animals. Cornell’s research gives doctors and veterinarians more ways to fight this debilitating disease. Advanced Veterinary Care is a Diamond sponsor this year and WHUD 100.7 FM has offered support.

Here’s how to sign up: Register by e-mail, regular mail or in-person the day of the event. Check-in is from 8 to 9:30 a.m., when we begin our walk. This year’s Dogswalk honors working military dogs, those unsung four-footed heroes that protect and serve our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After the walk, stay for entertainment and fun contests. Purchase food and shop the many vendors at the event. There will also be information booths on all things dog.

Then get ready for some high-flying action: the Mid-Atlantic Dog Disc Club will have you out of your seat with their gravity-defying feats of athleticism. See how real police dogs train for their important job of keeping America safe. The New York State Police Canine Unit is on the case and ready for action.  Enter your dog in one of our fun contests: Musical Dog Sit, Best Dog Trick or Best Dog Costume  for both children and adults. There will be prizes.
