Doris H. Vater

PINE PLAINS — Doris H. Vater, 88, died suddenly on June 23, 2014, at Sharon Hospital.She was born on May 5, 1926, in Millerton, the daughter of and Eva M. (VanDeBogart) and Charles B. Hoysradt Sr.On Aug. 17, 1947, at the Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, she married Ernest C. Vater Jr. He predeceased her.A life member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Doris joined the church when she was 14. She enjoyed singing in the choir and in later years serving with the Women’s Association. She was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer with the Office of the Aging for several years.During World War II, she served as a civilian volunteer plane spotter for the United States Army’s Aircraft Warning Service.Doris loved country music and dancing, and she loved nature so well that she hiked up Stissing Mountain when she was 82. Above all, she loved spending time with family and delighted in attending the school activities and sporting events of her grandchildren.She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, quilting and handcrafting.She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia, and her husband, Richard Koch, of Altamont, N.Y., and Lonnie D. Vater of Pine Plains; a sister, Wilma J. Homiak of Clifton Park, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Dale, Christy, Jennie, Shawn, Kenly, Vincent and Jansen; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Vincent E. Vater; a sister, Viola E. Adams; and a brother, Charles B. Hoysradt Jr. Calling hours are 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 27, at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.A funeral service will follow, at 12:30 p.m., at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, the Rev. Carol Miller, officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

On Saturday, June 21, Mort Klaus, longtime Sharon resident, hosted 250 enthusiastic supporters of Northwest Corner’s beloved nonprofit, Chore Service at his stunning 175-acre property. Chore Service provides essential non-medical support to help older adults and those with disabilities maintain their independence and quality of life in their own homes.

Jane MacLaren, Executive Director, and Dolores Perotti, Board President, personally welcomed arriving attendees. The well-stocked bar and enticing hors d’oeuvres table were popular destinations as the crowd waited for the afternoon’s presentations.

The Berkshire Bach Society (BBS) of Stockbridge will present a concert by cellist Dane Johansen on June 28 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The mission statement of the Berkshire Bach Society (BBS) reads: “Our mission is to preserve the cultural legacy of Baroque music for current and future audiences — local, national, and international — by presenting the music of J.S. Bach, his Baroque predecessors, contemporaries, and followers performed by world-class musicians.”

Its mission will once again be fulfilled by presenting a concert featuring Dane Johansen on June 28 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 29 Main Street, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
