Fine wine and good times at HLWA benefit party

The Highland Lake Watershed Association (HLWA) held its ninth annual Evening on Highland Lake benefit party on Saturday, Aug. 3.The event was held for the second straight year at the home of members Mark and Jean Blair, who live on West Wakefield Boulevard.Association president Dick Labich said 115 residents attended this year’s event, setting a new record for the group. Last year 85 residents attended the event. The purpose of this year’s event was to help fund several projects, including baseline water testing for contaminants, studying how development may have an impact on the watershed and communications to all residents near the lake.“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” event co-organizer Pat Masucci said. “The party helps us to raise funds for various programs. My husband Donald and I moved out here from Torrington in 1989, and we love it here. Highland Lake has nice and clean water where anyone can swim and enjoy themselves.”Gourmet foods were provided by 14 area restaurants, including Kelly’s Kitchen, Crystal Peak, The Bear Claw Coffee House, Health Food Corner and Chili’s Restaurant.Ledgebrook Spirit Shop provided fine wines, beers and liquor.Party hosts Mark and Jean Blair moved up to Highland Lake six years ago from Burlington.“We love everything about it,” Mark Blair said. “We enjoy the natural beauty of this area, how you can come up here and swim or boat.”This year’s event included an art show featuring various local artists, including paintings by Jean Labich, photography by Terry Platt and quill art by Annimarie Janczak.Music was provided by Gale Gardiner who performed folk songs for the audience.About an hour after the party started, a downpour forced party goers to huddle together under several tents. Everyone at the party stayed and continued to have a good time. The rain let up after an hour and a rainbow appeared across Highland Lake.“We had a very successful evening,” Labich said after the event. “Even with the rain, we had a very successful turnout. I would like to thank everyone who attended for supporting us.”
