Gilbert wrestling loses to Terryville

WINSTED — The Gilbert School wrestling team lost to Terryville 54-6 during a varsity match on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Gilbert.

Gilbert wrestler Logan Smith was injured during the final match. The extent of his injuries is not known, but after being slammed to the mat by his opponent, he did not move for several minutes and appeared to be in intense pain.

Gilbert Wrestling Head Coach Darek Schibi confirmed that Logan heard a pop in his shoulder at the end of the match.

“I think he’ll be all right. I’m hoping it’s just a bruise or something,” Schibi said. “We’ll know in the next couple days. We’re so young of a team that at this point we’re not looking at the wins and losses. We just look at how we improve with every match. I’m not concerned about team score, match score or if we win or lose. I have 12 out of 14 on the team who have never wrestled before.”

Schibi said he likes the fact that there are a lot of freshmen on his team.

“In the next couple years we’re going to look to expand,” Schibi said. “We also have our youth program. It’s called Hurricane Wrestling, and that is another program that will help our high school big time. It’s made up of kindergarten through eighth-graders. We have matches every Sunday in various locations.”

Gilbert Assistant Wrestling Coach Dan Langer said he enjoys coaching and being able to pass his knowledge of the sport on to the athletes.

“I like teaching them to work hard, be respectful and have the dedication to work for something,” Langer said. “Wrestling teaches them the basics of life, like how to have integrity. We will work hard to come back from this loss. We don’t have a lot of endurance so we will work on that and work on the basics.”

Tyler Duplin, 15, was the only wrestler to get a pin on the varsity team for Gilbert.

“I’ve been wrestling for four years,” Duplin said. “I like that I get to slam people. I just try to take them down,” Tyler said. “I practice five days a week. I like wrestling because we train hard, learn a lot and get in shape.”

Gilbert wrestler CJ Stone, 15, described Coach Schibi as a very good guy.

“He realizes that we’re first-year players,” CJ said. “He supports me in any way that he possibly can.  He is team-oriented. This is my first year of wrestling. I like the amount of work we have to put into it. When you finally get on the mat and show off what you learned and come out on top, that’s very rewarding.”
