Good times roll

NORTH CANAAN — It was another Pinewood Derby to remember. The annual Cub Scout Pack 22 race packed them into the North Canaan Elementary School gym March 16.It’s always great to see Cub Scout dens en masse, and the fascinating ways they design derby cars out of identical blocks of pine and plastic wheels. Cars are sent careening down a four-slot track from high atop the stage to an electronically monitored finish line in front of Contestants’ Row.This year, the Girl Scouts were invited, bringing cars such as the one made by Abby Hogan, covered in pink flowers with the slogan, “Girls Rule.”Girl Scout dads were also featured in a new division. Moms said they want to be added next year. Some rivalries are already heating up with the Cub Scout moms who race in the family division. As if things were not tricky enough in that realm. Boy Scout Christopher Duntz watched his parents compete, and said, “I don’t know who to root for!” Then there is the competition between men who fought tougher battles, but no less passionately. The Connecticut AMVETS Post 24 in Torrington bested the North Canaan-based Marine Corps League Northwest Detachment in the business category, again. That makes them four for four.“We took the overall win last year, but it doesn’t matter, as long as we beat him,” AMVET Gary Gustafson said, gesturing to Marine veteran Nicholas Gandolfo.“We won something: the crying towel,” Gandolfo said, getting to keep the actual towel they bring each year. “Maybe next year we should race against the Girl Scouts. Then again, they may be even harder to beat.”Instead, he vowed to get other local veterans groups involved next year. This should be good.
