Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — There is knowledge and there is wisdom, and rarely do the scales tip in favor of the latter when it comes to teenagers. With fewer than 20 years on this planet, it is difficult to amass enough experience to have perspective on what is important in life. A brief chat with HVRHS senior Brian Saccardi reveals that this is no ordinary teen.Saccardi is a Cornwall transplant, having arrived from Long Island at the age of 13. As he puts it, however, he just knew that he had found home after living in the suburbs during his elementary years. He had always been a nature lover, traipsing through the forests near his old home, and now that he is in more comfortable country, he has embraced every opportunity to be outdoors.Brian’s particular brand of knowledge is scientific and agricultural. Predictably, he is heavily involved with our agricultural education and FFA programs, and he plans to pursue a career in forestry, perhaps even a doctorate in the area. His desire for knowledge, however, is fueled by his passion to keep learning about a subject that he loves. As he puts it, “My goal in life is to be happy.” Wise words, indeed.

Political figures fair game for cartoonists

Bravo to The Lakeville Journal for publishing cartoons that are timely, insightful, and consistently on point. In his letter to the editor in the Sept. 4 edition, Tom Morrison complained that the cartoons unfairly target Republicans. Hmmmm… I looked back over the past few months of cartoons and found almost none with a character labeled as a Republican.
