Ice is black, but still: Be careful

KENT — Black ice has settled onto area ponds already — and intrepid skaters have been diligently clearing away all the recent snows that have been obscuring that ice.

Leonard Pond is one of the nicest outdoor skating spots, thanks to the hard work of Stephen Banffy, Matt Hannan and Luke Soule — who have not only plowed out a miniature rink on the pond but have also returned regularly with shovels and leafblowers to keep the surface clean.

On Sunday afternoon, Jan. 9, a small group of hockey players glided across the smooth surface, including Chris Richards and his father, James; and Tristan and Zachary Soule.

Anyone venturing out on any outdoor pond or lake is reminded that there are always wet and soft spots in the ice and extreme caution should be exercised.

As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
